Starting the Search - Why buy?
There are many different reasons why people decide to buy. Whatever your reason, it is important to take your time and think everything through carefully. Moving is a stressful life changing event, and a move for the wrong reasons could lead to disappointment, and unnecessary financial pressure. An alternative might be extending or redecorating your existing home. Or if you are not planning to stay in an area for long, renting may be more suitable. However, if you do decide to buy, your reason for moving will influence the type of home you choose.
First time buyer
This is the first step on the ladder, and you may not plan on staying here long term. Location is important, as you will want to be able to sell again easily. The new home you buy will depend on what you can afford, and if you intend to rent out rooms or start a family.
Growing family
As your family grows you may find that your current home becomes too small. If you and your family are comfortably settled in the area, you may wish to consider an extension, or an attic conversion as an alternative. If you do decide to move, you should check the local facilities in the areas you are considering to see if they compare favourably with your present location.
New job
Many people relocate because they are offered a job in a new area. It is important to spend time checking out the local facilities, and getting a feel for the neighbourhood. Get advice from a local estate agent. To help you get to know the area better, you might want to consider renting for a short time before you buy.
Retirement
You are entering a new phase in your life. The children have all left home, and the house may be too big. You may be looking for a more manageable home, such as an apartment or a bungalow. The location you choose may be determined by where your family live, and how close you need to be.
Change in lifestyle
It is becoming more popular for people to sell their city homes and move to the countryside. If you are returning to the countryside you will be more aware of what lies ahead. However, if you have lived in a city all your life, it may be a good idea to rent for a few months in the new area before you commit. You should consider how the changing seasons might affect your new lifestyle. An area that is idyllic during the summer months may become isolated during the winter.
